Why is Getting Rid of Sinful Baggage Is Still So Hard

Do you ever get frustrated with yourself? Do you ever get tired of the struggle with a habitual sin? Do you ever wonder if you’ll ever get rid of it?

If so, you’re not alone.

In fact, the apostle Paul felt the same way at times.

Last Sunday at Grandview church, I (Rick) spoke on Romans 7. In this poignant chapter, Paul tells a bit of his own story to help us understand ours. He expresses his frustration with wanting to do what’s right but still getting it wrong (Romans 7:14-24).

His point is that getting rid of sinful baggage takes more than our good intentions and best efforts. We need a power that can overpower our sins.

Thanks be to God that Jesus provides that power through His Holy Spirit.

“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:24-25).

If you want to make sense of your spiritual struggle, you might want to listen to the sermon on Romans 7. (The sermon begins at the 33:30 minute mark of the video).

I’ve also attached a study sheet that goes with the message. It does a deeper dive into two important topics raised in Romans 7: 1) The New Testament Christian’s relationship to the Old Testament Law; 2) Paul’s Spiritual State in Romans 7.
