Recently I preached a message from Romans 6:15-23 that began with a reference to a Bob Dylan song and a Paul Anka song.
If you are a fan of Bob Dylan’s music, you’ve probably heard his song, Gotta Serve Somebody (off his Slow Train Coming album). In the song, Bob makes a rather startling statement (something he was known to do!). He contends that, no matter who you are in life, you will wind up serving either the devil or the Lord.

Paul Anka, (a Canadian boy from Ottawa), wrote a song with a very different take on things. His song, My Way, asserts that he didn’t bow to anyone else but himself. “Let the record show that I took all the blows and did it my way.”
Which of the two songwriters got it right?
To answer that question, all we need to do is read what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 6:15-23. In this passage, Paul lays out the truth for all of us. And what he says will challenge and encourage you.
Recently, I preached on Romans 6 at Emmanuel Church in Barrie.
I begin by talking about Bob Dylan’s and Paul Anka’s songs and their differing visions on life. Then, we turn to Romans 6 to get God’s perspective on our lives.
Here’s a link to the church’s website. The sermon I’ve been writing about is from November 19th: Romans 6:15-23–You’ve Got To Serve Somebody,
