The Heart of the Preacher

The thesis of this book, published by Lexham Press in October 2019, is that preaching isn’t just hard work, it’s heart work.  In fact, the hardest part of preaching and teaching is the heart work it requires.

The book is organized into two parts. In the first, The Testing of a Preacher’s Heart, Rick highlights fifteen heart-level tests preachers often experience as they seek to preach God’s Word. These tests—such as dealing with ambition, comparison, or insignificance—are commonly faced but not commonly addressed in preaching books or at pastoral gatherings.

While the book is targeted at preachers, it gives spiritual counsel that can strengthen any Christian involved in serving Christ.

Part 2, The Strengthening of a Preacher’s Heart, provides practical guidance intended to help preachers prepare their hearts to face these heart tests in God-honoring, soul-stabilizing ways.

Getting Free From Your Sermon Notes (eBook)

Many of us who preach and teach God’s Word place a high premium on preparation. We study Scripture, seeking to understand what it says. We carefully prepare our speaking notes so we accurately communicate what we’ve learned. Our problem is, that when we preach or teach, we can feel overly tied to our notes. Manacled to our manuscripts. And that can keep us from fully connecting with our hearers.

How can we get free from our notes?

In this eBook, Rick Reed explains how preachers and teachers can find greater freedom from their teaching notes while still accurately communicating the content they’ve prepared.

Standing Firm (pdf)

Like it or not, all of us live on a spiritual battlefield. That’s the truth we read in Scripture and experience every day.

All who follow Jesus can expect opposition. In addition to the fight we have with our own flesh, we face a world that is often hostile to Christ. Behind any human opposition, we face a more sinister and powerful adversary. As Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over the present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Thankfully, God has made a way for us to be strong and stand firm.

In the Standing Firm Bible Study Guide, you will be guided through a study of Ephesians 6:10-20. You will discover powerful truths that will help you stand firm in the midst of a spiritual battle.

This study guide can be used individually or by small groups.

Building Up the Broken Places (pdf)

We live in a broken world. We see it all around us. We see it inside us.

The question is how will we respond to the brokenness in our world, our communities, our churches, our families, our own lives?

Nehemiah provides us with an example of a man who responded with compassion and courage. Upon hearing the sad news that the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins, he mourns and weeps. But he does more. He also moves out and goes to work. God uses Nehemiah to build up the broken places in Jerusalem–both the city walls and the people within the walls.

The Building Up the Broken Places workbook is designed to help you dig into the early chapters of the book of Nehemiah. You will discover life lessons that can help you build up the broken places around you.
